School Nature Trail Equity

The La Veta Town Board approved funding for La Veta Trails to add a new section to the School Nature Trail that will improve access so more people experience and learn from this example of a prairie ecosystem. Through the work of Sam Montalbano, who spent the summer as our Accessibility Technician, we learned that sections of the School Nature Trail had grades of up to 10%, which is steep for some users. The new section will be constructed below the hill which has the steepest grade. Help design and build the new section.

Promote Communities, Businesses, and Recreation

We are excited to announced a new initiative to publish the 2023 Spanish Peaks Region Recreation and Trail Guide to showcase the four communities in Huerfano County – La Veta, Cuchara, Walsenburg, and Gardner – as business and recreational hubs. LVT is currently working with recreation users, businesses, nonprofits, and land managers to market our area’s many outdoor recreation opportunities, including motorized and non-motorized trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, parks, and playgrounds. We will print 10,000 copies for distribution locally and statewide, and available in digital format on the La Veta Trails website.

Businesses and nonprofits that sponsor the guide will receive copies to distribute. La Veta Trails has five Business Sponsorship Levels ranging from a minimum donation of $100 to $2,500. Sponsors will be featured in the guide and the La Veta Trails website. Go to the La Veta Trails website for the Business Sponsor PacketIn addition to distributing copies to your customers, family, and friends, there are additional benefits based on your sponsorship level. See the end of this newsletter for the current list of sponsors.

Reduce, Recycle, Reuse!

Join the La Veta Trails project to restore old benches so they can be added to trails or parks to provide needed resting places. We want your help to assess the condition, replace broken wooden seats, and paint a unique bench that reflects La Veta as a special place. Complete a Volunteer Form and note that you want to work on the bench project.

Youth Fishing

We are looking for people to share their love of fly fishing. Help us plan a class in conjunction with the La Veta school, donate gear in good condition, teach a class, and serve as a mentor. Complete a Volunteer Form and note that you want to help with this youth fishing class. If you cannot help with the class, make a donation so we can purchase gear or take students on a field trip. Make sure you let us know your donation should be used to support youth fishing.
