About the La Veta Playground Initiative Project

The Town of La Veta, La Veta Trails, and the La Veta Public Library formed a collaboration to fund and construct a new playground in the La Veta Town Park in 2022. We share a mission to engage the community in developing, using, maintaining, and promoting recreational amenities that get people physically active outdoors. Community members identified the playground with fitness equipment as a priority during a needs assessment process conducted in 2019. The needs formed the basis for the La Veta Parks, Open Space, and Trails Master Plan, which the Town Board has adopted. The old playground was built when the needs of people of all ages and abilities were not considered. The equipment was so old that it had to be removed by the Town to protect users’ safety.

Our vision is to engage the community in building a new safe, multi-generational, inclusive playground to meet the needs of residents and visitors of all ages and abilities. The new playground with fitness equipment will cost $300,000, which we will raise through grants and locally raised funds. The total budget covers the following costs:

  • ADA accessible playground equipment, including swing sets, climbing structure, and slide;
  • ADA accessible picnic tables;
  • Outdoor fitness equipment, including strength building stations and balance, suitable for all ages;
  • Wood timber border with wheelchair access and wood fiber surfacing;
  • Kiosk to recognize and thank donors; and
  • Adjacent ADA accessible parking and sidewalk (to be funded by the Town).
