About the ongoing Restoration Efforts

La Veta Trails and our partners work to restore and preserve parks, open spaces, and trails through projects to address a backlog of maintenance issues, age, weather-related damage, and over-use. By working together to improve and restore public spaces, we safeguard public access to natural areas.

Area Restoration

Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area

Frequent wind and winter snow events cause major damage to trails. When annual maintenance needs to address the damage go unaddressed, long-term problems arise. The public is no longer able to access trails, or create social trails possibly impacting fragile plants when they bypass a barrier. Since 2018, La Veta Trails through its Spanish Peaks Wilderness Stewards program has reduced the backlog on the Wahatoya Trail and Schafer Trail.

Huerfano State Wildlife Area

One of the public spaces that La Veta Trails helps maintain is the Huerfano State Wildlife Area (HSWA) in Gardner. The recent high winds have caused significant damage. Dozens of large trees have blown down in the campsites, along the county road, and in the river. La Veta Trails will help Colorado Parks and Wildlife restore the Huerfano State Wildlife Area in Gardner.
