In 2015, La Veta Trails partnered with the Town of La Veta to restore this trail. Volunteers rebuilt footbridges, resurfaced the trail, replaced signage, planted trees, and improved drainage to reduce erosion. LVT provides ongoing maintenance.
Wahatoya State Wildlife Area
Since 2015, La Veta Trails has worked with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to improve and maintain one-mile trails around two fishing lakes, to build steps on a trail, and install pedestrian gates to create a safe crossing on CR 358. In 2019, volunteers helped CPW build steps on the Wahatoya Lake Trail to provide a safe route through a steep arroyo. The steps improved fishing access on the south side of the lake. In 2021, LVT volunteers helped CPW construct pedestrian gates and a connector trail that provides a safe pedestrian crossing on CR 358 between the fishing lakes and hiking trails. Huerfano County installed pedestrian warning signs.
