La Veta Trails is thrilled to announce that Cal Mittag has accepted the position of Stewardship Coordinator, effective November 1st. Cal will be responsible for regional stewardship programming, project development, and on-the-ground management of field projects and crews. He will also serve as the point of contact for our partners, volunteers, and contractors.
In 2020, Cal earned his Wind Energy Associate’s Degree from Lakeshore Technical College. Following college, he spent two years working as a Wind Turbine Technician, gaining hands-on experience climbing, practicing rescues, and performing maintenance on turbines nationwide.
Before joining La Veta Trails, Cal served as a Crew Leader first with the Southwest Conservation Corps and most recently with the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers. Cal brings a proven track record in leading backcountry crews, constructing and restoring trails, restoring habitat, and working on a prescribed burn crew utilizing his chainsaw skills, and learning about fire. He has experience working in Wilderness settings, as well as in a variety of municipal trail and recreational access projects. Cal especially loves rock work, including constructing rock steps, turnpikes, and retaining walls.
Cal’s interests outside of work include biking, hiking, traveling, bird watching, and learning about history.
We believe Cal’s leadership and skills bring outstanding expertise to the La Veta Trails team, to our partners, and the region he will call home.
