La Veta Trails (LVT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2015 to restore, protect, and expand access to trails and public lands in rural Southern Colorado through stewardship and conservation. We envision an interconnected, multi-use trail network linking communities, parks and open spaces that connect people of all ages and abilities to the outdoors. Our work is grounded in the belief that equitable access to public lands strengthens community health, environmental stewardship, and regional economic vitality.

Position Summary

The Stewardship Coordinator (SC) plays a key role in advancing LVT’s mission by strengthening community connections and supporting on-the-ground stewardship efforts. The SC will lead outreach and volunteer engagement efforts, working closely with community members, volunteers, project leaders, and the LVT Board. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a passionate and growing nonprofit dedicated to long-term restoration, conservation, and inclusive access to public lands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to engage diverse community members, organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers, including scheduling, assignments, and tracking volunteer hours.
  • Support Project Leaders by coordinating volunteer participation, materials, and tools.
  • Collaborate with the LVT Board to support grant-funded projects and fundraising events.
  • Represent LVT at community events, meetings, and regional or state gatherings as needed.
  • Travel frequently to local, regional, and state meetings and or conferences.
  • Flexible work schedule. At times shifting schedule to work evenings and weekends based on project or meeting needs.

Desired Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science or studies, nonprofit management, or a related field, plus at least three years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building collaborative relationships across diverse communities.
  • Experience with graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative suite or Canva.
  • Work experience or familiarity with the region served by LVT.

Requirements, Skills, & Experience

  • Experience recruiting, coordinating, and supporting volunteers.
  • Proven ability to organize events and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, including public speaking.
  • Ability to build rapport, develop networks, and contribute positively to a team environment.
  • Proficiency with productivity applications, social media platforms, and database systems
  • Strong conservation ethic and passion for environmental stewardship.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices that support equity and belonging within LVT and regional community.
  • Strong communication skills in respect to communicating with volunteers, writing reports, creating

a volunteer record, tracking volunteer hours, using the systems LVT currently uses.

  • Comfortable in backcountry settings, inclement weather, and high altitude. Strong hiking ability

with the capacity to travel long distances.

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and access to a personal vehicle.

Compensation and Benefits

20-hours per week non-exempt position at $21.00 to $25.00 per hour based on experience. Flexible schedule. Mileage reimbursement. Professional development opportunities. LVT branded shirts and hat. There is a potential to add more hours with grant funding.
